Listed home providers must hold an operation permit from DFPS and complete a background check. Listed homes must also comply with local city and ordinances. Providers may not care for more than three unrelated children. They do not have participate in continuing professional development unless stated by their city of residence. Listed homes are not inspected by Childcare Licensing. In few instances a city, such as Richardson, perform their own inspections through the health and fire department. In the event there is a report of suspected abuse or neglect, DFPS will preform an unannounced onsite investigation.

Registered child care homes must comply with the DFPS Minimum Standards for Licensed and Registered Child Care Homes as well as their local city and fire ordinances. Registered homes are inspected every two years. Onsite investigations are performed by DFPS in the event there is report involving potential violations of minimum standards or in the case of suspected child abuse/neglect.
